I'm worried about the refs and UConn's FT shooting today...

As Self lamented after the Austin Peay game, we got whistled for 27 fouls in that game. Against a team we blew out and really didn't have to pressure that much. Against UConn, we'll have to play a much more intensive D--but if we got called for so many fouls in the easy 1st-round game, an officiating performance in this game that parallels that one would be an utter disaster for KU. All the more so since UConn is the top FT-shooting team in the land. They hit 21 of 23 free throws in their first-round win. That is sick.

KU really needs the refs to not call a bunch of touch fouls on our guys, and to let us play our solid D. If they don't, we'll face very tense moments from foul trouble for our key players, plus putting UConn on the line to offset (or augment) anything going on in the flow of the game.

I'm officially worried about the refs in this game...

Does someone want to help talk me out of such anxiety?

It's a tenuous and thin line between KU avoiding foul trouble yet still playing with aggressive defensive intensity. So far, the refs are clearly calling the tourney to favor aggressive offenses, putting the defenses on their heels. I hope they back off of that a bit today and let KU play its style of D.

I understand the angst that is clearly a part of our psyches today, but come on guys and gals. If UConn shoots 25 free throws, and we shoot 25 free throws, tell me EXACTLY the point differential if both teams hit their percentages to date. If the game is that close, we've got a problem, but do you actually believe that it will be a 3 or 4 point game? We're a much better team, and I emphasize 'much better.' We are not a gimmick team like WVU or Baylor, and we defeated Texas and Texas Tech twice this year, by decent margins. We are the hottest team in the tournament. And we are clearly more talented and deeper than anyone left in the tournament. We have the best coach, and we are experienced. What else is there? If we execute and play loose, we will win. I want each of you to breathe deeply a couple of times and imagine what UConn is thinking about today. Yes, they are worried, and their concerns are legitimate. How are THEY going to stop US? I have no idea, and neither do they. Enjoy the moment, and get rid of the angst. This is our day and our night. We will win by 12 or more. Bank it!

Nobody said anything about UConn beating us or being the better team. We'll clearly win if we play to our upside and the officiating is not egregious.

The point I was making was whether the REFS will intervene in such a way that they completely take KU off its primary game (tenacious man to man defense). If we have to play soft and on our heels because the refs call every whiff of air coming near a UConn body, we will be in for a SERIOUS challenge. It's not only that UConn will go to the line more, but that they shoot it lights out once they get there. That AND the fact that it would take away KU's aggressive edge and potentially put good players on the bench, in foul trouble.

That was my only point in this thread. It wasn't a prediction thread. Wasn't even a full game analysis thread. Just an expression of concern about one facet of the game--the zebras--that we cannot control, yet can have a huge bearing on a game like this, given UConn's efficiency at the line.

The numbers support your thesis, Senex. UNCONN is shooting 79.1% from the line on the season, while KU is shooting 70.8%. In a hypothetical game where both teams shoot 25 free throws, UCONN makes 19.8 and KU 17.7. In my judgment, that is not a significant difference and not worth getting our knickers in a twist over. That, of course, assumes they are calling it dead-even. I hope they do so! For reference, in the high-foul Austin P game, they shot 10 more FTs than KU. If that happens today, that's likely 8-9 free and extra points for Uconn. That would NOT be good.

PS: Thanks for addressing the one concern I have, guys. I needed some reassurance on this front, because that's the one area (along with KU needing to be loose and to hit a healthy amount of threes) that I think is a key in this game. KU is the better team--we just have to go prove it!

We're playing in the same arena, so we'll come on 30-40 after they finish.

Hang in there. I'm going swimming to work off energy!

The officiating is almost always egregious. What matters is if the egregiousness is one-sided. If both teams get screwed, we have much more depth and our depth is probably as talented as their starters. I realize that we all look at games like this with great trepidation, but I feel just like I did in 2008. We play our best, we win. We stink it up, we lose. The last time we stunk it up was in Iowa, and this time we won't make that mistake again. I always prefer to win in Iowa, over say, winning in Montana, and I've got a good feeling that we're about to do what we need to do. And by the way, can any of you name the only team from the state of Illinois to ever win the NCAA tournament?

Get me past the dreaded game 2 (in this case, against tourney-savvy UConn and 7-0 Ollie), and I'll be golden. If we get to the FF, I think this game might be one we look back on as the toughest of our first four. But as long as we win, I won't care. ;)

Go Hawks!
