"When you have a ruling class that doesn’t believe in — or even much like — the fundamental values of the nations it rules, things tend to work out poorly.”
Glenn Reynolds
For years Bill Self has talked about 'toughness' as his greatest goal for the teams he's coaching. Until this season I never really understood what he meant, but after today, I know. This team exemplifies 'toughness.' It oozes 'toughness.' It defines 'toughness.' And I love it. The 2008 team was almost elegant in comparison to this squad, but as good as they were, this team is tougher. I'm exciting about the ride which we are going to share for the next few weeks. Very, very excited.

“With kindest regards to Dr. Forrest C. Allen, the father of basketball coaching, from the father of the game.”
1936 inscription on the portrait of Dr. Naismith, displayed above Phog Allen's office desk at KU.
I couldn't agree more, Peter.
When you sum together:
* the way the lads execute as a true team on the court,
* the way the rotation has gelled and cohered,
* the sheer number of weapons we have,
* the way everyone plays key roles to create a formidable whole,
* the way Coach Self is getting the most out of the team through masterful motivation approaches,
and
* the key intangible of toughness you cite (both mental and physical)...
It's quite the potent brew.
So much so that I'd have to go back to 2008 to recall being this confident about a KU team's prospects heading into the Dance.

When Roy was our coach, I always hated our few games against Illinois because they were so tough. Now Self has the toughness at KU that he used to have at Illinois.
