If not for his alma mater and Morgantown "thugball", Self would have a .700 road record in conference!

What are the odds KU would meet another conference team in the NCAAs?
It happened twice in 1988 (KState and OU), but I don't recall any other instances off the top of my head.

Odds of facing one in the tournament are pretty good. If we send teams, there will 2 big 12 teams in 3 out of 4 regions. Meeting one in the final? Pretty astronomical odds....we gotta get there, and so would OU, WVU or one of the others.

The odds, however, of meeting another conference foe in the Big 12 tourney are roughly 100%. ;)

The straight odds still probably aren't that good. I haven't done probability math in earnest in decades, but before knowing anything other than KU being a 1 seed, the highest odds for a KU 1 seed to meet a Big 12 foe in the NCAAs are roughly 12.5%

Highest odds are if B12F is an 8/9 in the same region -- roughly 50% (100% 1 seed win times 50% 8/9 win). But before selection and seeding are done, the straight odds that a B12F 8/9 seed could end up in KU's region are just 1 in 4, assuming just 1 team is slotted as an 8/9 (which is the case in Lunardi's projections, he has TT an 8 ), so .5x.25 = .125, or 1 in 8

I'll leave it to the real statistician folk to do more than that.

This is great stuff, HE. Really appreciate you taking the time to compile and post it.

I have one question, though: I certainly remember the 2013 KU road loss at TCU, but you also show Self as being 8-1 vs. TCU at Allen. My mind recalls every one of the other Allen losses to the teams you cited, but I'm drawing a complete blank as to when, how, and why we ever lost to TCU at home.

Can you provide a recap on that one, just to jog the memory?

Thanks!

Certainly not! No one wants to remember the game that was the worst since KU lost to the Johnson County YWCA team back in Doc Naismith's days!.

Which is another way of saying it never happened, except in that alternate universe of spreadsheet formula copying errors. :(

I've kept this spreadsheet for years now, and every year I have to add the new year table to the mix and update the formulas in the Summary table to include it. This time around I missed that I had not properly adjusted the summary formulas for TCU and WVU when I copied my original edit to the rest of the summary table. :pinch: I blame those stinkin' rats that deserted the conference for this -- I wouldn't have the problem to deal with each year if they hadn't jumped ship!

Thanks for the eagle eyes and question, Brother Konza! I always appreciate being able to get the right info published, and I really appreciate a solid proofreader. ;)

Thanks, Brother HE. Glad to have caught it.

The losses are so rare that it's easy to remember them all, which is why that notional one left me scratching my head.

Thanks again!
