No, not the spice. The basketball player, or perhaps, The Shooter. I watched a good portion of the Warriors game tonight, and I have to conclude that Curry is the best shooter I've ever seen. Ever. The game winner was his 12th 3 of the game, and it was over 30 feet, and it was just as natural a shot as if he was 2 feet from the rim. 12-15 from 3!! And everyone knows he's going to shoot, and no matter what they do to try to defend him, they fail. Utterly amazing. In many ways the most important play of our 2008 season was keeping Curry from taking the last shot in that game. Yes, you know which one.

I'm with you. Never seen anyone even close to his ability to shoot. Seems effortless in his ability to shoot off of the dribble and with range.

Truly magical shooting.

Indeed we do. Forcing him to give up the ball so he would not take the last shot was the final difference in that game.

The old timers that are pooh-poohing him today -- they may be the stars of the past, giants who once ran the courts, but this is not the basketball of the past, so their opinions carry little water. Those who say they would come out to guard him... yes, they would try that, until he burned past them so many times on drives to the rim. And if a teammate rotated over to defend him on the drive, he would still burn them by passing to his own open teammate for the easy bucket. They are old men, perhaps pining to be thought of? To be important one more time in their old age? One last stand on the stage of publicity? They have their laurels, yet they would deny him those which he has rightfully earned. It is embarassing to this one, who is certainly old enough to understand some of what they must be feeling these days.

I think of that sequence in the game several times a year, for some reason, and always come away thankful for your reasons, Peter.

That was the "monkey-lifting" game for Self at KU (re making a deep run), and if it had gone against us (due to the amazing Curry), Self's seat would be very hot by now.

Crazy to ponder. And yes, Curry is the best shooter ever.

He really is unbelievable...and so much fun to watch. He's an amazing shooter, but he's also so much more than that. Guys like Kyle Korver or Mike Miller (from a few years ago) are also great shooters, but that's their main weapon (and only in spot-up situations). Curry, of course, is a phenomenal spot-up shooter, but he's also just as good off the dribble...and from a few feet behind the 3 point line...and has that insanely quick release. But the fact that he handles the ball so well and can drive to the hoop so easily is what makes him so deadly. Most players aren't able to shoot AND handle the ball at such a high level. That, and seeing this all happen with a guy of such small stature physically (relative to NBA standards) helps add to the lore (IMHO).

Here's a 2-minute Sports Science episode that shows why his shot is so good. (It was made during last season.)

And another one about Curry's shooting (from this year), specifically focusing shots from 30+ feet!

And as a bonus, here's a clip comparing Curry and LeBron's athleticism:

Here's the final sequence of the game. KU was leading 59-57 and just did not allow Curry to get off a shot. (Thank goodness!)

Note: This was taken by a fan and is from the opposite side of the broadcasted footage.

It's not just his shooting. The guy makes passes that even a video game couldn't replicate!

But what I really love about him? It's the obvious joy he takes in playing.
