“With kindest regards to Dr. Forrest C. Allen, the father of basketball coaching, from the father of the game.”
1936 inscription on the portrait of Dr. Naismith, displayed above Phog Allen's office desk at KU.
That was a really gritty win tonight. The 2nd half giveaway of a 17-point lead was unpleasant, to say the least, but it's semi-explainable when you look at the foul trouble, diminished minutes, and ultimate departure of Lucas and Jamari--coupled with the injuries to Perry that took him out of a huge swatch of that half.
But the true fly in the ointment, skunk at the garden party, or (blank) in the punch bowl was FREE THROW SHOOTING.
What is up with this team at the line? Some nights we have no problem, but far too often we just stink at the line as a team. Tonight was the latter. 18-30 for a putrid 60 percent. This tendency really needs to get nipped in the bud before the post-season commences, or it will bite us big-time. I really don't want to witness another "Syracuse moment" in the Dance...

I would say the stats do not even tell the whole story. We have been very bad about missing the front end of 1 and 1s. Last night was no exception. I believe in the first half we missed every one of them.

Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!
KOnza, there may be some things to worry about with this team but shooting is not one of them. Look at the stats below. This team has the Best Shooting Efficiency of any team at least back to 1990. As for FT shooting, this team has been decent but not great at 69.8% for the season. And other than the Kentucky game (53.6%) and the K-State game (60%) we have been shooting very well from the FT line the last 9 games.

Ok. Maybe it's just me, but there have been many times where I have sensed a lack of focus from the guys while at the line. I know there's been a lot of discussion of this topic in the past, but mental focus must accompany the rhythm and repeatable motion needed for successful freethrow shooting. Honestly, I sometimes think I am seeing some "bobblehead motions" from a couple of the guys in their effort to stay loose.

My concern that these stats do not show is how many front ends of 1 and 1 this team has missed. I understand that is picking nits but darn it I want perfection.

Concur completely, Hairyhawk. That is my concern too.
Corpus, I didn't question our shooting from the floor, which has been steady. I questioned our consistency at the line. We've seen enough there this year to know we are capable of a truly bad night from the stripe--which in the tourney can be the difference in advancing or going home depressed.

RKCKJHK!!!
As others have posted this does seem to be the anomoly game. But as others have also posted 70% for the year is not that great. I too fear that the anomoly game happens in March. It never seems to happen in January. To this point I have thought this team was always pretty focused at the line in "big" games (75 & 80% vs OU and WVU second games). But yesterday should have been "big" as well for lots of reasons. Only seniors had won there, seperation from OU & WVU, in State rivalry....all pretty big motivators I would think, but for whatever reason the focus wasn't there. No big deal if you like having a consistently great team with 25 wins. Huge deal if you dread the finality of a one and done tournament.
