Poll: Should Perry's jersey hang in the rafters one day?

Absolutely! He deserves to be in that elite class of KU players.
10 32.3%
I'm not sure yet. Let's allow his final season to play out, including in the tourney.
13 41.9%
Sadly, no. He's been a great contributor, but he doesn't make the very high bar for the rafters.

I really wanted to vote "absolutely," but despite the fact that he's one of my faves, Perry is basically a very steady, dependable player who doesn't seem to have the fire necessary to become one of the all-time elites. (Maybe he needs to adopt "Light my fire" as his theme song.....)

It would be wonderful if he could prove me wrong by having some breakout games in the Big Dance.

First, note that those criteria were Roy's, not KU's. Captain Kirk was raised to the rafters and the didn't meet any of the criteria (so far as I can recall anyway). I doubt anyone would challenge that one; he was a leader and a performer.

PE I believe has tended to disappear at odd times although he tends to bring it every night this season. We also saw his toughness and desire to win at K-State and against OU in AFH.

I don't believe the "body of work" measures up, but if we win it all and he is a cog in that I will admit my error.

Remember, the idea is make the rafter's truly special. Think of all the get\eat teams and players that have passed through the this campus (i.e. predating AFH) and consider that we only have what, 25 jerseys up there?

I don't think this needs to be permanently pinned, so I'm taking it off the top.

It's worth noting, however, that the final vote tally almost looks like a recent presidential election outcome in Ohio or some highly competitive swing state! 10 in favor, 8 opposed, 13 on the fence.

LOL...

Let's hope the "on the fence" crowd gets to see their wish fulfilled! (To wit, a very, VERY deep KU run in the tourney--NC???--making Perry's case far stronger)

First, thanks for the unpinning note. I immediately noticed the thread's absence at the top and wondered.

Second, as one of the fence straddlers I totally agree with the comments of both you and USAF Jayhawk. If Perry can be key in leading the team to another NC, I will gladly join the "hang it up!" crowd!

BTW, I double checked on "Captain Kirk" -- as USAF J noted, there really are not rigid requirements any more, the former requirements are now used as guidelines by KU. Meeting them almost guarantees a place in the rafters, but not meeting them does not preclude one. The closest Kirk came to meeting any of them was being named a 3rd Team AP AA and being selected the NCAA Midwest Regional MOP in 2003. Add on leading his team to back to back Big 12 titles (including 16-0 in 2002, the only perfect season in Big 12 MBB history), back to back FFs and an NC title game in his last two years and you have pretty darn good reasons to honor him.

Also current policy is that a player has to have been gone for at least 5 years before his jersey will be considered for retirement. Anyone remember who instituted this? I thought it might have been because Roy made sure Kirk made the rafters, but Kirk was not honored until March 1, 2009.
