Kong told me awhile back that the guy is actually a Misery fan/alum, and that the Misery administration has tried to buy the site from him, but he's refused. Gotta love it...

It reminds me of those signs outside of factories or other industrial sites where it says "## days without an accident" or whatever, when somebody drops the vat of molten metal, some poor slob has to go outside and reset the thing back to zero. I think there was a movie awhile back where that was a running gag.
