I'm assuming this site is accurate as to the players who were starters, altho they might get a position wrong (e.g., I had to switch Mario (listed as PG) and RusRob (listed as SG) in 2005-06).
2004-2005 Kansas Jayhawks Depth Chart

 		PG SG SF PF C
Starters	A. Miles	K. Langford	J. Giddens	C. Moody	W. Simien
Rotation	R. Robinson	M. Lee	A. Galindo S. Kaun
Lim PT J. Hawkins D. Jackson	C. Giles
Lim PT N. Bahe M. Niang
Lim PT S. Vinson
2005-2006 Kansas Jayhawks Depth Chart
 		PG SG SF PF C
Starters	R. Robinson	M. Chalmers	B. Rush J. Wright	S. Kaun
Rotation	J. Hawkins D. Jackson	C. Giles
Rotation C. Moody
Rotation M. Downs
Lim PT S. Vinson	R. Stewart M. Kleinmann
Lim PT J. Case

According to this, Christian Moody was a starter in 04-05 who returned but ended up not starting in 05-06 due to new talent on the team (Julian and Darnell).
That leaves just 2 years in the streak without a returning starter from the previous year.

As JR noted, the 08-09 team was loaded on the bench, so KU truly did just reload in the starting lineup, but by definition all the starters from 07-08 were gone. The 13-14 team was also a reload, but with a lot of untested green, albeit talented green, stepping into starting roles. Still met the criteria, though.

And that site you referenced is really a good one! It's been officially bookmarked!

I don't think I would stake my life on the accuracy of that site. Note the caveat on the Depth Chart page - "Depth Charts are updated daily throughout the season. Stats are based on the last 5 games played".
Note a couple of obvious distortions - this year Hunter started 10 games and the site shows he barely played. Same with Cliff A last year - he started 6 games and averaged 17+ min in 28 games - the site shows zeros.
Although there were technically no returning starters for the two years cited, it hardly seems relevant in any discussion as to how KU has managed to keep winning the Big 12. Any smart coach will always be grooming multiple subs.

... returning starters are a talking point used by both print and electronic media, making it something of a matter of interest, hence the questions.

The reality is that the power of returning starters is something that always gets talked about. (Of course, it always helps to have *good* players as returning starters.) And with the recent fascination with trying to win with one and dones, the appeal of the returning starter storyline seems to grow.

I like the storyline that Self is putting out these days -- no NBA draft stars in this group (not this year, any way), and yet this team is -- so far -- doing as well, if not better, as its predecessors.

Yep. And he's called it a "grind-it-out" kind of team. Given what we know about Self, is there any higher compliment he could give to one of his teams? ;) I think for that reason alone he really likes this team. A lot.

Agreed!
