Eighty five miles west of town amidst the winter’s chill.
Our Jayhawks did their best, but alas t’was all for nil.
A loss inside those 8 walls was a very bitter pill.
Smash your bottle on the gravestone and get it out, my friends,
Our Kansas Jayhawks are home again.
The Horned Frogs head north from Fort Worth
at the New Moon’s latest birth,
and it bodes well our guys are grounded, their feet solidly on earth.
They’ll shake that ol’ moon’s impact, brush it right out of their way
As they look to gig those Horned Frogs on a snowy winter’s day.
Lay a wreath on Naismith’s grave and sing hoorah, hooray!
Jayhawks are in The Phog for another KANSAS...
... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!
KANSAS (16-2, 5-1) finds itself in a 3-way tie atop the Big 12 with ISU and KSt as Saturday's game with the revitalized TCU Horned Frogs (14-4, 3-3) approaches. KState tops the standings due to having defeated KANSAS in Manhattan. Time to take the memory of that last L and throw it out the WINdow!
BIG 12 Men's Basketball Standings @2023-01-20 (Source: Big12Sports.com)
Head coach Jamie Dixon has put together a tough and very solid team in Fort Worth, one that will definitely be bringing heat to The Phog on Saturday afternoon. They back down to no one. With the exception of the inexplicable early season 1 point home loss to Northwestern State, their 3 other losses have been a 2 point loss at home to ISU on Jan 7, then a 4 point loss at Texas and a 9 point loss at WVU (Mountaineers finally get a Big 12 W) after sandwiching in an impressive at home 14 point W against KState (82-68). Big, fast and physical, they will be sure to bring their A game to The Phog, and it will be up to our Jayhawks to downgrade that game.

probably can't be much bigger for the Jayhawks, now a game
behind the leaders in the Big 12 race.
And after their last two appearances on the court?
The Jayhawks are looking to save face.
They've been edged out away and destroyed at home (the thought of that... what a fright!)
Time they hunker down,
time they gird their loins
as they take to the road for another KANSAS...

KANSAS (16-3, 5-2) finds itself in a 3-way tie for second place in the Big 12 with ISU and tu, while KSt tops the field.

AP#8 KANSAS (17-4, 5-3 and 18-1 v KState in AFH in the Bill Self era) is looking to potentially grab a share of first place and redeem itself after losing the Sunflower Showdown Part 1 in Manhattan 4 games ago. Kansas State (18-3, 6-2 | #7AP) is still tied for first with ISU and tu as I write this, but after Monday's games (Baylor @Texas and ISU @Tech) KState will be looking to either keep pace with those two or take advantage of their losses by winning Part 2 of the Sunflower Showdown as they come to The Phog.
(UPDATE: tu beat Baylor and Tech shot more free throws than Iowa State took to come back from 23 down to win in OT. tu currently all alone in 1st - HE)

NOT 8 PM CT as originally posted. I've corrected the previous post to reflect the proper start times.
Apologies.
HE
P.S. - Monday night Tech made more free throws than Iowa State SHOT (TT 26-37, ISU 12-21) to come back from 23 down in the second half to defeat Iowa State in OT in Lubbock 80-77 (talking about that *home* cookin', brought to you by your friendly neighborhood Big 12 refs), but Texas staked at least a piece of 1st place by defending its new home court the Moody Center against Baylor 76-71. The horns will have it all to themselves with a KU win in The Phog tonight, which would result in at least a 3-way tie for 2nd with KState and ISU -- a 4-way tie should TCU defeat WVU in Fort Worth tonight.
"Waiter!!! We'll have more of the same tonight, please -- and our compliments to the Ch(r)efs!"

AP#8 KANSAS (18-4, 6-3 Big 12, 4-2 away) and #13 Iowa State (15-6, 6-3 Big 12, 11-0 home) meet in Hilton Coliseum, both tied for second place with KState and TCU and hoping to keep pace with Texas, which held serve at home against Baylor earlier this week to end up all alone atop the Big 12.

Of major importance -- KUSports.com - Tait: Kansas basketball coach Bill Self expects McCullar, Pettiford to be available Saturday; here’s more on KU’s injuries. Of note: MJ Rice remains limited by back spasms. Rice told Self he could not go at halftime of the win over Kansas State. Rice is getting treatment every day. Self hopes "he can be a piece that we have moving forward that we can use.”
ALL-TIME SERIES KANSAS v IOWA STATE

asteroid's game day prediction has not been posted as of post time.
asteroid's Big 12 Projection, Round 9 (link) predicts no road wins on Saturday, but three of the games are tossups.
KSU 75 UT 75 a toss up in Manhattan; KSU already won in Austin
ISU 66 KU 65 a tossup in Ames; KU already won in Lawrence
BU 76 TTU 68 in Waco; BU already won in Lubbock
OSU 67 TCU 66 a tossup in Stillwater; first meeting
WVU 71 OU 66 in Morgantown; OU already won in Norman
Yeah, I can live with that.
Both Kenpom.com and the DPPI have KU with the #1 Strength of Schedule.
Kansas remains #7 in the NCAA NET rankings, with a 9-4 QUAD1 W-L record, the 9 wins to date equaled only by 9-1 Purdue.
The ESPN pregame matchup predictor says KU falls 68-67, (win probability just 41.9%), but the spread is -1 favoring KU, indicating again the game is a toss up... and Vegas favors KU, even if only slightly.

always takes a turn through the raptor trap.
But these 'Hawks won't faint or turn to flee
as they take to the floor of the bal-chatri.

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!
Our Jayhawks (20-5, 8-4 Big 12, 3-3 away in the Big 12) and the Cowboys (16-9, 7-5 Big 12, 12-1 (5-1 Big 12) at home) meet in the bal-chatri known as Gallagher-Iba Arena for the 16th time in Bill Self's KANSAS career. HCBS has a winning record in all but two Big 12 opponent arenas -- WVU (5-6 to date thanks to this year's KU win in Morgantown) and OK State, where his Jayhawks teams have a record of 7-8 to date. A win on Tuesday will leave WVU as the only conference arena in which he has a losing record.

As we saw last game, Zuby Ejiofor was a game day decision. He played well in Stillwater and seems good to go now. Both Harris and McCullar and their OKState game injured ankles are projected to be available on Saturday, but tomorrow's practice will be crucial in the decision making process for each. Meanwhile Bobby Pettiford and Zach Clemence will be suited up but most likely not see court time if HCBS has his "druthers". It's a hard ride, heading down to Fort Worth
Just 2 days between games where both teams flew.
Last time they played the results weren't good
And you can bet our guys remember, too.
The Frogs have Miles and Lampkin back, and
with them they're a world class team.
So here the rubber meets the road...
Can our team reach it's dream?
To win perhaps their toughest fight
to date?
To sate that vengeful thirst?
To finish things on Monday night and
Know they're still in first?
It's ESPN Big Monday and it seems it's only right
for this showdown to be on this stage on this latest KANSAS ...

IT'S SENIOR NIGHT IN ALLEN FIELDHOUSE
on another KANSAS ...
... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!
Wednesday, March 2, 1983.
That was the last time KANSAS lost a Senior Game, ironically enough to Nebraska, not one of our most formidable hardcourt opponents.
That's right, folks, the Jayhawks have not lost a Senior Game in 39 straight years!
Larry Brown - 5 seasons, 1983-88
Roy Williams - 15 seasons, 1988-2003 and
Bill Self - 19 seasons, 2003-2022... and his AY2022-23 Jayhawks are shooting to make it 20 and 40!
THE SENIOR GAME speakers, per HCBS, will be Kevin McCullar (Senior) and Jalen Wilson (4th year graduating.redshirt junior). Both Indicated in a press conference with HCBS on Monday that they will not be back next year.
We know redshirt junior Dajuan Harris, Jr (who is graduating in 4 years this semester) will be back for at least one more season, and the way he is talking? Probably for his COVID-19 year as well (YAY!)
HCBS has indicated super senior Cam Martin will be applying for (and should get) a medical redshirt for this season, so he should be playing college hoops next season... whether it will be at KU remains to be seen. Most people willing to speculate think he will go somewhere he can get playing time. I've yet to read anything definitive -- or even remotely so -- on his "KU Stay/go" status for next year.
I also don't know the status of any other COVID-19 eligible players. I will speculate that since Mike Jankovich is a senior with super senior eligibility and will not be speaking Tuesday night, it would seem our favorite walk-on this year will be back next year.
(EDIT: McCullar, Wilson, Dajuan Harris Jr., Cam Martin, Joe Yesufu and Michael Jankovich are graduating in May. - HE)
I should note that KU will also be honoring graduating student managers Jaden Gard and Davis Gunnigle on Senior Night.
Oh, yeah, one last thing -- that 1983 score was NU 60 KU 58.
SO on to the Tuesday night game, KANSAS hosting Texas Tech...
Our Jayhawks (24-5, 12-4 and 1st place Big 12) host Texas Tech (16-13, 5-11 Big 12) with just 2 games left in the regular season.
A KU win insures at least a tie with tu for the regular season conference title.
A KU win and a tu win @TCU Wednesday -- Saturday in Austin would be all about KU winning outright or tieing with tu.
A KU win and a tu loss @TCU Wednesday would make the Saturday season finale in Austin all about pride.
A KU loss and a tu win @TCU Wednesday would mean Saturday in Austin would be for all the marbles.

NB: Does not include Monday Night results!
INJURIES
Dajuan and Kevin are probables for Tuesday night.
I have a feeling it would take a natural disaster to keep them on the bench.
Otherwise the injury situation remains the same...

defending National Champion KANSAS JAYHAWKS!
SO ... what we've got here is... another KANSAS JAYHAWK...
... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!!
Our Jayhawks (25-6, 13-5 and BIG 12 CHAMPIONS!) play Hall of Famer Bob Huggins' Mountaineers for the third time in 2023, this time for the right to advance in the Big 12 Tournament! The winner gets to play the winner of Baylor v Iowa State on Friday at 6:00 PM on ESPN2, the loser gets to go home and rest up for the NCAA Tournament next week! KANSAS is going to be a top seed in the Big Dance, WVU is fighting to make the cut -- and to stop KANSAS from sweeping them 3-0 this season/postseason by earning the West Virginia program's and Bob Huggins' first ever win against KANSAS outside of Morgantown. Versus KU Huggins is 6-22 in his career and 6-17 at WVU, with all 6 wins earned in Morgantown.

One huge question mark -- Kevin McCullar is a game day decision due to back spasms.
IMO if McCullar can't play, KU will not win.
That simple.
Hope he can play and play well, and if not hope I am wrong and way off base.
Zack Clemence is off the injury report.
