There are several stories out there today reporting TU and OU entertaining leaving the conference for the SEC. Here we go again. It seems to me such a move would mark the final dismantling of the Big 12. Would be interested in other's speculations on where KU would end up if TU and OU pull the trigger.

Hey Slayer. Could you provide some links. I have not seen those. That is interesting indeed. Clearly the Big 12 could not survive the loss of either Texas or Oklahoma. A dissolution of the Big 12 would be problematic for KU. You would hope being an AAA school we could land in the Big 10. But our football program is such a hot mess of epic proportions that we would have a bit of an uphill battle. I am old and set in my ways and I struggle with all these changes. But such is life. I sure hope the Big 12 survives but I could live with Kansas going to the Big Ten.

It is my understanding that the Big Ten requires that a university must be an AAA school. There are only 3 AAA schools in the Big 12, Kansas, Iowa St. and Texas. Seems like KU and Iowa St. would be natural additions to the Big Ten. If OU and UT went to the SEC, that would leave those other 6 schools to find a home. West Virginia would obviously have to look at the ACC orBig East. The other 5 would Battle it out for a four slots in the PAC-12. Maybe the PAC-12 would go to 17 schools and take all 5. Or, K-State or Oklahoma St. could round out the ACC to 16 teams if WestVirginia became the 15th. Orrrrrrrr! Could KU possibly join the ACC? It sure seems to me that KU is almost a perfect fit for the Big Ten as is Iowa St. but there is the Kansas legislature issue that could gum up the works by requiring KU and K-State to be a package. The world has changed (boy is that an understatement). Time for the Kansas legislature to realize that and drop the KU/K-State package requirement. It’s sad for old purists like me who love the rivalries but life marches on and it is ever more so All About the Benjamins. I guess a new rivalry with Izzo and Sparty could be fun.

I am all for the Jayhawks joining the Big 10. It seems that KSU has and will oppose that.
For hoops the Hawks are an interesting fit for the Bid East; Creighton, Butler , Nova, Even the teams that are down are historic or in major population/media centers. DePaul, St John's...

Football might consider the MVC.

Aww jeeez, here we go again . . . .

Well, I, for one, was perfectly happy with the BIG VIII back in the day. (Of course it was a different time -- I had hair then) :(

Corpus, what is the AAA? KU was early in the AAU, but I don't know the AAA.

Also saw on the local Wichita Sportscast last night that the B12 commissioner brushed off the any schools leaving the B12 a couple of weeks ago stating that the financial incentives are not there like they were a couple of years ago citing the availability of live streaming services. I think the commissioner may have missed the boat on this one.

Here is a report that the Jayhawks have reached out to the Big10 to discuss a move.

One article I read said that if we lost 2-4 teams, we would no longer be seen as a power conference. I don’t think that would be a good thing for us. We should be proactive this time around and find our own backup plan.

There is no way KU could afford the huge penalty that at least on paper faces a school that bolts. Whether that applies if UT and OU leave seems an interesting question. With them gone the Hawks and Clones could legitimately argue " thing have changed."

HE: The Michigan reader comments are interesting, and almost universally opposed to adding KU due to our abysmal football program. :-(

Corpus: I completely forgot about the angle of the archaic, backward, anachronistic Kansas legislature on this. Ugh. Hope they don’t destroy us. If UT and OU bolt, I’d take the Big Ten in a heartbeat!

Let’s hope this well-reasoned article and author are not right.

One thing the writer misses on IMO is the lack of academic fit in re KU and ISU. AAU membership has always been a big thing for the B1G, so that’s a plus for both schools.

Another thing… Interesting that KU jumped 5 places in that Econ analysis despite the impact of COVID-19 and the terrible football program. Seems to me (with my well lubricated business mind… yes, bartender, I’ll have another double) an indicator for some significant upside should the football program ever become good again.

As for cultural fit — one of the reasons I initially attended Indiana for grad school was the similarity between KU and IU. They just felt like siblings in many respects when Anna and I did our campus visits before quitting my job and pulling up stakes to return to the significantly lower short term financial prospects of grad school. Maybe things have changed significantly since then, but I’d wager KU today is a better “cultural” fit than NU ever was (we all know FB got them in, but NU has been a disappointment there).

Anyway, just grousing here. Nothing I say or do is going to impact the future. I am content that we finally have a young AD in Travis Goff who is highly thought of across the country (witness one commenter in one of the linked postings referencing an unnamed B1G source that KU finally has someone competent in charge), and a Kansas native (Dodge City) and KU grad to boot. I believe that together with Chancellor Girod, KU will manage to make lemonade out of this sour mess… even with the F’d up Kansas legislature. (Package deals only work when operating from a position of strength. Neither KU, nor particularly KSU, is so positioned.)

Rock Chalk, Jayhawks!
We’re keeping the faith, yeah…

If the Big 10 was that concerned about Nobel prizes they should not have ran off the U of Chicago. KU does mesh with many Big 10 schools flagship in a state that , until recently took public education very seriously, full array of professional schools and PhD programs, a university press, gorgeous campus.
The one ding might be that admissions let me in, but so did Iowa.

Dallas Morning News reporting announcement to be made “in 48 hours” (i.e., this Monday) that the move is a done deal.
www.dallasnews.com/sports/texas-longhorn...re-to-sec-next-week/

So we may know by Monday.
OU/tu not messing around.
Expediting to declaw state legislatures?

If Big XII folds, what happens to contract (TV thru 2025) and penalties for leaving? Thinking if OU/tu go and KU and ISU can bolt, the conference as such is basically DOA with just 6 teams, then perhaps the penalties go out the window as well?
