KU ATHLETICS

✦ KU MEN'S HOOPS -
• Joel Embiid (KU 2013-14) is representing KU with his debut on the USA Men's Basketball team at the 2024 Olympics. A native of Yaounde, Cameroon, Embiid became a U.S. citizen in September 2022. He was the 2023 NBA Most Valuable Player and the #3 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft He is the first Kansas men's basketball player since Sasha Kaun to participate in the Olympic Games. Kaun won a bronze medal while representing Russia in the 2012 Olympics in London. The last KU player to play for the USA National Team was Danny Manning in 1988. That team lost to gold medalist USSR in the semifinal, then defeated Australia in the Bronze medal game. Four years later in the 1992 Olympics came the Dream Team.

As I write this the USA leads in total medals at 103, with China second with 76 and host nation France third with 55.
Golds: China 31, USA 30, Australia 18, France and Great Britain 14.
Tomorrow, the US men's basketball team faces off against France for gold.
The US women's soccer team will also have a shot at gold in its match-up tomorrow with Brazil, a potential redemption arc for the four-time World Cup champions after an early loss in that tournament last year.
Sunday, the women's volleyball team will compete against Italy for gold after defeating Brazil yesterday and the women's basketball team will play in the gold medal game after beating Australia in today's semifinal.
