PODCAST: Business Wars - Season 95: College Football Wars
5 Episodes wondery.com/shows/business-wars/season/95/
cwobrien11, one of my favorite JayhawkSlant posters, posted about this Friday afternoon. Here is his description (why build a new wheel when one is readily available? Just be sure to give credit where due)…

I just came across a great podcast that I think most of you would enjoy. Wondery has a podcast called Business Wars where they do 5-6 podcasts that dive in on conflict between two separate business entities that are competing for a market.
I’m a nerd so I find it enjoyable, but season 95 is called College Football Wars. It starts as a PAC-12/B1G discussion and finishes up with the death of the PAC-12. It goes from just before the formation of the BCS through the formation of the Pac12Net to the TV rights problems and eventual death of the conference. It’s sourced well even if it’s a little campy. Lots of good information in it including some things that were speculated but not confirmed.

I listened to that the other week. It was very well done and provided a lot of background information that I wasn't aware of. It's crazy to think there was a timeline where 5 Big 12 schools could have went to the B1G around 2010/2011. As well as the fact KU would have been part of the Pac-16 if A&M opted for the SEC like they always wanted.
It goes to show that the Pac-12 had the upperhand in pretty much every situation and decided to misplay their hand every time. They could have survived if they make any number of decisions over the years and just messed it all up. Them not taking the ESPN deal that Yormark did is what really put them under. If they took it we'd be talking about which Big 12 schools were left behind when schools went to the Pac on life rafts.

It almost happened twice…once when they added Utah/CU and they almost pulled it off after the Big 12 lost A&M/Mizzou. If they had been able to find a financial solution for the Longhorn Network it probably happens. Pretty damned crazy.
What stood out for me was that at almost every single turn over DECADES, they overvalued their own importance and political pull. It’s insane how many times they made the same basic mistake over and over without learning from it or questioning it. They were told over and over again for a decade that they didn’t draw eyes nationally but they never believed it or did ANYTHING to change. They believed it so it must have been true.
I have yet to listen to it, but if cwobrien11 recommends it, I can recommend it sound unheard.
Enjoy!
The Lawrence forecast from Accuweather.com:

Tonight: Partly cloudy with a thunderstorm in the area. Lo: 65° F (18.3° C)

That is all for now.
Hope you have a GREAT day!

Often attributed to John Lennon and his song "Beautiful Boy", it was actually originally published in Reader's Digest in January 1957 and credited to American writer, journalist, and cartoonist Allen Saunders. Lennon later slightly modified the quote and popularized it in his song.
