Sat down with Johnny Furphy for @NBATV and he was clear that he hasn’t decided if he’s staying in the draft. If he returns he would go back to @KUHoops

12:44 PM · May 16, 2024

I say again, if he’s assured of being a round 1 pick (minimum $2M), I cannot see him coming back.

Now it’s possible his family has money and it’s not as big a deal for him to come back and try to improve his stock to move up from a “Round 1” (#15-30) pick to a lottery pick (1-14) next year (much better deals depending on eventual draft position).

It’s possible the idea of winning both the Big 12 and especially the NCAA Championship has a huge pull on him. A last chance to achieve those goals while being enveloped in the warm embrace of a grateful Jayhawk Nation and KU student body one last time before having to jump into the deep end of the NBA life. Coming back to a team that is projected preseason #1 without him, i.e., an already “stacked” team, one that has an excellent chance to achieve those goals with just a little luck (staying healthy, dodging or just overcoming bad breaks).

It’s possible.
It’s always possible, even if highly unlikely.

But I will say again, I do not expect him back.

I will be shocked - SHOCKED, I tell you - if he returns to KU.

Elated, ecstatic and exceedingly pleased, but shocked!

If Furphy returns I will happily admit I was wrong — and I will happily wish him well if he does not.

Being an international student, the Final Four and an NCAA championship may not have much pull for him. KU was most likely a means to an end (NBA). And don't forget international students have students visa limitations that prohibit NIL participation (They're expected to be 100% students and subsequently not allowed to hold a part time...lawyers haven't yet reconciled the NIL with that restriction). As such, although I love the kid dearly (and want him back), I see zero pull if he is even sniffing the first round.

247Sports - Finkelstein: Stay in the 2024 NBA Draft or return to college? Expert advice for players with decisions to make

Furphy mentioned.

As I previously mentioned, even with JF's not being sure (which clearly infers there is something tugging at him to return to KU), I'll be shocked if he withdraws.

JF signed with Priority Sports, and my friend is representing him. JF’s decision has nothing to do w/ NIL, and more so what the teams tell him regarding his development and where it is best to develop.

Below is a text message from my friend.

“All about if we feel he’s not getting past a certain point in the first round of the draft, and we have a team that is willing to develop him properly”.

My friend repped Sheldon, JWill and many other Hawks. He has always been great about inviting me to meet his players, a coach or two when they are in Chicago for pre-draft workouts.
